Day 5 Columbia Journalism School Digital Media Storytelling Boot Camp – the final video

Boot camp is finished.  Virtually all the class completed a video by the 3pm deadline today and I have to say that some of them were outstanding, compelling stories with excellent video that captured one’s attention.

Topics covered included Mike’s Bagel Shop near Columbia Medical Center, Tender Buttons, Sprout in Soho, the High Line and teaching science to elementary students.

I would like to thank the talented group of videographers led by Duy Linh Tu, Assistant Professor of Professional Practice who provided instruction and coaching. Kenan Davis, Digital Media Coordinator, and Digital Media Assistants, Alex, Andy and Lisa, freely gave their energy, enthusiasm and experience.

I, unreservedly, recommend the course to anyone interested in learning video production and editing skills.

As Ira Glass said,

“It is only by going through a volume of work that … your work will be as good as your ambitions.”

I have a long way to go, as you can see from the following video (that make take a moment load), but I now have the confidence to shoot and produce some video.

Thanks for sharing the journey I have been on this week.  Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Update May 29, 2011

Chris Raymond was one of the talented journalists who attended the five-day boot camp with me.  His video on the Tender Buttons shop in New York City is great storytelling.

Now that he has made his video publicly available, I encourage you to watch it below. I really like the way Chris edited this story, and from a technical perspective the three-point lighting of the interview is really well done!!  Bravo Chris!! I hope you will produce more video stories.
