Letter from Vienna

One of the messages that I have taken away from the European Association of Urology meeting in Vienna, is the increasing complexity of treatment options for advanced prostate cancer.  However, I have equally come away with the impression that company sponsored sessions is not the right way to provide continuing medical education (CME), if not done in an independent way.

There are 28 industry symposia at EAU in Vienna, each sponsored by one company.  That’s a lot! Of the sessions I have been too, all have prominently featured the company logo, name or some form of branding on the invitations, slides and meeting materials.  If you want more information afterwards, the pharma company (not any CME provider), will contact you.

My Impressions of ASH

IMGP2289 300x225 My Impressions of ASHI recently attended the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in Orlando so thought I would share my general impressions (in no particular order):

Convention Center Food was Poor:

The food at the Orange County Convention Center reminded me of an airport – desperate choices, poor quality and overpriced.  As for no Starbucks or decent coffee shop, civilization has yet to reach Orlando! The Peabody hotel across the road had coffee shops that offered a $3 single espresso shot, but they ran out of pods on the Monday morning – faced with the overwhelming demand that seems to have not been anticipated!  Memo to Starbucks – look into a convention center franchise.
